We use vegetable tanned full grain leather from Santa Croce, one of the finest in the world. It is durable, natural and it will age beautifully the more you use it.
Besides style and functionality, the single most important feature in creating a unique travel bag is choosing the best leather. The leather should be durable and also age beautifully and gracefully, carrying the memories of all the travels and adventures over the years.
The oldest professions in Florence are goldsmiths, wine makers and leather craftsmen. It was only natural that we selected our suppliers from the ancient Santa Croce quarter of Florence, renowned in Italy for being specialised in leather tanneries. Here we partnered with amazing artisans who have been working the leather for generations, maintaining unique production traditions alive for centuries.
The assembly of any handcrafted leather bag begins with the selection of the leather hides.
There are four types of leather. 'Pieno Fiore' (Full grain) is the best leather money can buy. It is the most durable, looks natural and feels soft. Next is top grain which has only some of the grain on the top after most of the grain has been sanded off to get rid of the scars. But this has the effect of removing the unique character of each hide. It has also a negative impact on durability and makes it look less natural. Genuine leather comes from the bottom half of the hide and doesn’t have any grain. Bonded Leather is the shavings of leather, glued and pressed together.
At Luca Faloni, we only use the very best full grain leather from Santa Croce sull'Arno for our travel bags. You will be able to see the actual grain and lines which make each bag different. This type of leather maintains full resistance and is therefore extremely durable. It will not wear out, and it will develop a nice vintage patina over time.
Among the various tanning methods, vegetable tanning is the most traditional and the most recognisable. It is the only form of tanning that is able to let the leather retain its natural characteristics and markings. It is also the most environmentally-friendly, eliminating the need for harmful and abrasive chemicals.
